The M20K 231 is the turbocharged Mooney. A Continental TSIO-360 puts out 210 horsepower and, more to the point, keeps putting it out as you climb. Where a normally aspirated engine is running out of breath at 10,000 feet, the 231 is still making sea-level power and picking up true airspeed with every thousand feet. Cruise runs from the mid 170s down low into the high 180s and beyond up high, on roughly 10 to 12 gallons an hour. That is the best fuel-per-mile figure of anything on our ramp.
N1047A carries Garmin GNS 430W WAAS GPS/COM navigation, retractable gear, four seats, and complete logbooks with verified TTAF and SMOH figures.
The 231 makes the most sense if you fly west of the Mississippi, cross weather regularly, or want the option of getting on top rather than picking through. The tradeoff is that a turbocharger is one more expensive thing to maintain, and turbo overhauls are not cheap. If you fly mostly below 10,000 feet in the eastern half of the country, you are paying for capability you will rarely use.
