Four airframes, one basic design. The difference between them comes down to power, whether it has flaps, and how seriously it's set up for aerobatics.
The trainer. Cheapest to buy and to feed. Continental O-200 on the earliest airframes, Lycoming O-235 after that.
The all-rounder. O-320 power off short strips, no flaps, aerobatic-certificated. The one most buyers land on.
The backcountry pick. One extra foot of wing and the only Citabria with flaps. Highest gross weight in the family.
The aerobatic one. Fuel-injected IO-320 with a Christen inverted oil system and a header tank for sustained inverted flight.
Legacy Champion and Bellanca airframes first, current American Champion production in brackets. Figures vary by serial number and modification history — always confirm against the specific aircraft's weight and balance and type certificate data sheet.

Fabric aircraft hide things. Corrosion under a fresh coat of paint, a wood spar that's been weeping at the root, a logbook with a suspiciously tidy gap. We've bought and sold enough of these to know where to look and what a squawk actually costs to fix.

Used Citabrias generally trade between $45,000 and $85,000 as of mid-2026. Early wood-spar 7ECA trainers sit at the bottom of that range, and low-time 7GCBC Explorers with upgraded avionics sit at the top. Hours since major overhaul, fabric age and spar material move the number more than the model year does.
The 7ECA is the gentlest introduction — less power means less to manage in the flare and lower running costs while you build time. If you already hold a tailwheel endorsement and want one aircraft that covers grass strips, cross-country and aerobatic currency, most buyers are better served by the 7GCAA.
Yes. The whole family is certificated in the aerobatic category to +5g and −2g — the name is "airbatic" spelled backwards for exactly that reason. Approved manoeuvres are listed in the aircraft's flight manual and include spins, loops, aileron rolls and Immelmanns. Only the 7KCAB is equipped for sustained inverted flight, thanks to its fuel-injected engine, header tank and Christen inverted oil system.
It matters a great deal to resale value and inspection burden. Most Citabrias built by Champion and Bellanca use wooden spars, which need careful inspection for cracking, glue-line failure and moisture damage. American Champion moved to aluminium spars and also sells metal-spar replacement wings that can be retrofitted to older airframes. Never assume from the year alone — verify on the actual aircraft during pre-buy.
Only the 7GCBC. It also carries a wingspan roughly one foot longer than the 7ECA, 7GCAA and 7KCAB. That combination of flaps and extra wing is why the Explorer is the family's short-field and backcountry choice — and why it consistently commands the highest prices.
